The International Black Film Festival of Nashville: Defining Our Stories, Transforming the Image

About Us

The International Black Film Festival of Nashville

"Through the art of film we celebrate the rich diversity and creativity of the Black Diaspora for the cultural enrichment and education of our international communities."

—IBFF Mission

The International Black Film Festival of Nashville (IBFF), established in 2006, is a collaboration of dedicated professionals who recognize a need for a “community” effort for African American and other communities of color to showcase their work as emerging and skilled independent filmmakers, actors, composers, screenwriters, directors and other film industry professions. While visibility and job opportunities have only marginally increased, the majority of African Americans typically are not afforded the necessary access or resources and are often overlooked in this industry. Our mission is not simply to be just a “movie house”, but an environment where the novice and the veteran have access to profitable opportunities, gather to expand and share their knowledge and network.

“Defining Our Stories, Transforming the Image” as its organizational theme, IBFF strives to insure culturally accurate depictions in film with special emphasis on providing a forum for unheard, unseen and unknown viewpoints, and to showcase the rich creativity and diversity found in communities of color locally, nationally and internationally.

IBFF is also excited about its partnership with the historic Belcourt Theater. Nashville’s nationally recognized historic not-for-profit home for film and performing arts will incubate an annual film festival, creatively named the International Black Film Festival of Nashville (IBFF) and other events.  Belcourt adds it’s reputation, expertise in film programming, event production, finance, and marketing.  This year the Sundance Institute selected Belcourt as one of fourteen (14) theaters nationwide to join its Sundance Film Festival in an initiative to further build audiences for independent film.

The amazing synergy created allows us to stick to our goal of promoting progressive film-based events focused on providing access and opportunity to underserved communities, foster relationships with other arts, cultural and entertainment entities and encourage social awareness.
